Souls-like combat, pixel-perfect platforming, and an indie dev team proving it can be done.

We’re Trying Something New
Indieformer is all about finding the next great indie game before it blows up. That’s why you’re here—to stay ahead of the curve, and making that easier is what this is all about.
Sponsorships and paid opportunities only happen when they’re genuinely worth backing. Your attention is valuable, and that’s always respected.
Now for something new. For the first time, an entire issue is dedicated to a single game—one you can support early on Kickstarter.
This is Frontline, a new edition of Indieformer that puts the spotlight on a project worth jumping on early. And to be clear—this isn’t a copy-paste from the developer. This is written by us. There are polls at the end of this issue to leave feedback.
To kick things off, we’ve teamed up with Indievelopment (not our newsletter, but another great indie company) to highlight a game they’ve helped bring to life. And this one’s already a hit—it smashed its funding goal in under four days.
Let’s dive in.

A Quick Chat with the Devs

Q: Why Tails of Fate, and why now?
Tails of Fate pushes Metroidvania gameplay further—where choice isn’t just about where you go, but how you play. Switching between three distinct characters means every challenge has multiple solutions, letting players shape their own path through combat and exploration.
Why now? The genre is thriving, and as a lifelong Metroidvania fan, there’s no better time to innovate. Tails of Fate brings something fresh—fluid, character-driven exploration with deep customization. Players want more freedom to experiment, and this game is built for that.
Q: How have you pulled from your inspirations and made them your own?
Tails of Fate is built on a mix of Eastern and Western folklore, using mythologies as the foundation for its world and characters. But this isn’t just lore—it influences gameplay. Every character is shaped by their mythology, impacting both the narrative and how they play.
The result is a world that’s alive and interactive, where choices matter beyond just the story. Combat, exploration, and progression all shift based on the character you embody, creating a unique fusion of familiar themes and fresh mechanics.
Q: What does gaming mean to you? How has it influenced your life?
Gaming is storytelling, but not just passive storytelling—you live the experience. That connection between player and world is what makes this medium so powerful.
For me, gaming has been about exploration, challenge, and community. It’s taught problem-solving, persistence, and creativity. Whether it’s a moment of triumph, a challenge that requires strategy, or an emotional story that sticks with you long after you put down the controller, those experiences stay with you. That’s the energy I want to bring into game design—worlds that challenge players but also create meaningful connections.
Q: Honestly, how hard is it to make a game?
Game development is tough—Metroidvanias? Even harder. The genre demands a perfect balance between exploration, progression, and combat, all while ensuring the world stays engaging and cohesive.
The challenge isn’t just making a big, interconnected world—it’s making sure every backtrack, every hidden path, and every encounter feels rewarding. On top of that, Tails of Fate’s three-character system adds another layer of complexity, making sure each hero plays uniquely while fitting seamlessly into the experience.
But that’s what makes it so rewarding. Every challenge pushes innovation, and when it all comes together, seeing players interact with the world in ways you designed—it’s worth every bit of effort.
